Our MISSION

  • When a marriage ends, it is often one of the most stressful times in a person’s life. The parties are often hurt and angry, anxious and fearful of the future, wondering how to maintain a parent-child relationship if their  frequency of contact is reduced, thus causing feelings of being overwhelmed and powerless. The parties begin wondering how to support two households instead of one, how much support to pay, will my spouse turn the children against me, will I have enough money to live on?

  • The stress comes in three or four waves.  1st~ Deliberation– should you get a divorce or stay married.  2nd~  Litigation– you see a lawyer and file a case in the courts.  3rd~ Readjustment– readjusting to living a single life as opposed to a married life.  And, possibly, 4th~ Redirection– redirecting your life into new and different channels such as going back to school or changing careers.  Often, the four waves overlap each other and exist at the same time, all causing a great deal of stress.

  • For over 40 years, North Shore Divorce Lawyer Edward I. Stein has sought fair and just results for clients in all manner of family law proceedings, including complex, high-asset divorces, annulments, child custody cases, child support cases, etc.  With our main office located near the border of Cook County and Lake County, we have helped families throughout the North Shore successfully resolve even the most difficult cases. With decades of experience representing high-profile clients, we are dedicated to turning problems into solutions by protecting our clients’ rightful assets under the law and ensuring that they receive the property they deserve.

  • When you come to a fork in the road do you know which way to turn?  When your life is spinning out of control, we can help stop the commotion by providing calming, personalized and effective representation and developing a plan of salvation to help solve your problems.  Our goal is always to settle your case with a minimum amount of conflict and litigation through the use of negotiation and settlement conferences. We understand that when you entrust your family’s future with us, it is our job to give you peace of mind by working towards the best possible settlement for you and your family. Not all cases can be amicably settled. Where negotiations break down, we will zealously litigate your case and fight for your rights. When it is time to fight, we will not be intimidated and we will not back down. We are experienced trial attorneys and we pride ourselves on our trial skills. We are devoted to helping you in this difficult time and minimizing the amount of stress created by the divorce process.  Every case is important to us and we never take your trust for granted.

  • Historically, divorce and family law proceedings have been adversarial in nature. Today, the Family Law courts emphasize settlement and efficient dispute resolution. Our primary mission is to help our clients obtain the best possible results in their cases. We are of the opinion that a fair and efficient settlement will reduce the tension and the stress of their family law litigation. However, if a settlement is not possible, we are prepared to vigorously litigate your case through trial. We will provide the stability, experience and guidance to help you through these difficult times. We understand that when the unreasonable emotional desires of an individual take priority over the best interests of the family, the only winners are the lawyers. Our first objective is to help our client accurately assess his or her case in a calm and objective manner and look toward settlement before resorting to litigation.

  • We provide our client with the personal attention and support to help reduce their stress and anxiety. We are accessible. We are available by phone and email. We usually return your calls and emails within 24 hours or sooner. When necessary, we provide efficient and assertive litigation. We explain the advantages, costs and risks of litigation to you in a way that you can understand. We work closely with a variety of therapists, child development consultants, appraisers, custody evaluators, forensic accountants, forensic psychologists, vocational evaluators and attorneys practicing in other areas of law to provide you with the resources to present your case in the best possible manner. Throughout the litigation, we always keep an eye on the possibility of a fair and equitable settlement.
